Camp Shawnigan Improvements

Improvements & Enhancements

The new Camp Shawnigan will leverage Universal Design Principles to achieve a new standard of accessibility and inclusivity that will be Life-Changing, by Design.

Improvements
  • A west-coast inspired lakeside dining hall with a fully accessible commercial kitchen, food preparation and serving areas.
  • New waterfront access and dock to enable fun and adventure in an inclusive and safe environment, providing the excitement of a swim or a boat ride with a dignified and easy beach entry into the lake.
  • A barrier-free gymnasium, outdoor swimming pool and hot tub, and creative arts studio.
  • 10 2-bedroom cabins with kitchenette, loft, shower room, covered deck, and fireplace in living area.
  • A hotel-style building including 12 double-occupancy suites and multipurpose rooms for learning and recreational programs and gatherings.
  • A new change room building adjacent to the pool with showers both inside and pool side.
  • An off-site overnight campsite on the other side of Shawnigan Lake road giving campers the added experience of an overnight camp-out.
Enhancements
  • Built to achieve Rick Hansen Foundation ‘Gold Standard’ Accessibility Certification, SAFERHome Certification, as well as minimizing energy consumption and environmental impact.
  • An outdoor amphitheatre with adjacent kitchen and bbq area designed for performances, presentations, and ceremonies.
  • A hi-tech navigation and safety system that monitors the health and well-being of all guests and sends cues to users to provide directions and flagging changes in surfaces.
  • Redesigning the landscape with features like a tree-top walk/roll path to transform former ‘no-go’ zones into a welcoming, accessible adventure.
  • Sensory-friendly, safe, and calming spaces to meet the specific needs of people at all points on the Autism spectrum. Featuring calming colours, appropriate lighting, and integrating multiple protected quiet areas and a Snoezelen Room to help reduce agitation and anxiety.
  • A new dock that provides opportunities for safe transfer to kayaks, lift/hoists to move campers on board boats and open deck areas for fishing and gathering. The dock is partially covered by a sheltering roof, providing shade in the summer. Solar powered lighting along the dock edges and the roof, provide visual guidance and lighting at night and navigation lighting when approaching the dock after dark.
